Renewable Energy

As part of U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administrations projects to help develop the technology and prototypes for renewable energy in the 1980’s, Clay developed methods to evaluate the motions, loads, and responses of floating offshore thermal energy conversion platforms (OTEC) and the attached cables and risers.  Much of the motivation for many of the types of projects was the idea of oil independence.  Now almost 40 years later, the renewable energy initiatives are motivated by global warming as well.  Clay recently carried out wing design and aerodynamic analysis for the application of wing sail designs previously used on yachts, and now re-configured for ships (OceanFoil).
